The problem with temporary fixes is that they make the choices even harder with revenue continuing to decline. That means even more draconian cuts next year. The only real alternative is to streamline government by boosting productivity, a move public employee unions won't allow.

Did you really just conflate Europe's governments with the Chinese government? And speaking of economic prosperity, did you miss the WSJ article headlined, "Europe recovers as US lags"?

I am sure it would come much to her surprise for Jean to know that she is one of my favorite California politicos. Clearly this is not because she and I agree on much. In fact, we agree on virtually nothing. I'm a fan of Jean's because she is a passionate ideologue -- her passion to see a larger state, with greater taxation and greater redistribution of wealth, is remarkably consistent and genuine.

Of course the recipe that she would cook for California would be terrible. Not only does it fly in the face of the kind of limited role for government that is essential for economic prosperity, but Jean is yet another progressive who would replace the tenants of our founders -- Adams, Hamilton, Jefferson -- and give us the bigger government advocated by the likes of FDR, Woodrow Wilson and Barack Obama. Yuck. If I want that kind of government, I'll go to Europe or to China. No thanks.
