As president of the National Association of Commissions for Women (www.nacw.org), I wish Ms. Rose would check her facts before she publishes them. NACW is, indeed, staffed and continues to provide services to its member commissions. We have continuously held annual conferences, providing learning experiences for our members as well as supporting the important work they do in cities, counties and states. Just as every women's organization in America, we are dealing with the economic impact. And, just as women do, we are being resourceful. We are exceedingly proud of our members, and of our national organization.

President, NACW

The column by Susan Rose plainly shows that differences exist when the female half or more of our society is paid less and is less far less likely to get elected to public office.

Some of those commenting above offer nothing except to resort to the 2 most common reactions of the empty headed idealogues - insults, vague and unsupported generalities and a rewrite of history.

Such arguments are virtually identical to the ones made when the vote was denied to blacks, American Indians and, less than 100 years ago, to women.

California's budget deficits are not attributable to commissions. Instead, they are attributable to conservatives who did not reinstate the full auto licensing fee, which alone would have generated $ 5 billion annually. The deficit is attributable to conservatives who passed a 3 strikes law plus prohibition-like drug laws that require taxpayers to bear the huge financial burden of keeping people in prison for life. The deficit is also attributable to the downturn in the business cycle that was supposed to turn up with conservative-sponsored tax cuts and laffer curve (no one is laughing.)

The deficit is attributable to the fact that unlike most other states, California barely taxes cigarettes and has NO taxes on oil extraction fees.

We need the commission Rose talks about and we could afford it and much more if conservatives were less hell bent on borrow and spend policies that impoverish our quality of life and mortgage our children's futures.

Those are the facts that conservatives seek to obscure with name calling and by calling for personal responsibility while they advocate for policies that continue to subsidize wealthy individuals and corporations.

This is really helpful. Hard for any of us to know how to sort out the best way for the government to address the huge inequities that women face, and this piece gives evidence as well as strategic arguments. Will forward on. Thanks.

Oh Yes, shuffle the deck and deal a new hand. Liberals are always up for that. They can never see a time for a commission, committee, or government department to end. What better way to hand out favors and show constituents you care?

A new Women's Commission is needed...one that includes some women of lower economic status than the usual jewelry rattlers that makes up most of these "commissions."
